INVITATION TO ATTEND
The 17th Australasian Plant Pathology Society Conference marks the 40th anniversary of the Society. The conference offers participants an opportunity to reflect on the achievements in a time of unprecedented scientific discovery about the nature of plant disease. It is also a time to ponder the directions of our profession amidst the challenges posed by emerging diseases, food security, climate change, water, trade, bioterrorism, consumer safety and preferences, and the opportunities presented to agriculture and horticulture by biofuels, phytomedicines and leisure activities.
The conference theme “Plant Health Management: an integrated approach” addresses these challenges from three angles – fundamental discovery, the application of these discoveries to practical problems and the adoption of research. Keynote speakers will lead plenary sessions focused on each theme, with concurrent sessions based around offered papers and posters, with a supporting program of special interest workshops and field trips.
This year the conference will be held in the Civic Centre of Newcastle, a bustling, historic, post-industrial seaside city 150 km north of Sydney. Newcastle boasts easy access from all major cities, a range of accommodation, exciting cultural activities, superb beaches, and other nearby attractions including the Hunter Valley, Barrington Tops National Park and more superb coastal scenery.
On behalf of the organising committee I invite you to register your interest, prepare a presentation and turn up to be part of this major regional event.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION PROCESS
All abstracts must be submitted electronically via the Conference website.
To submit your abstract online visit the website www.apps2009.org.au and click on the ‘Submit Abstract’ button. Helpful hints on successfully submitting abstracts will be on this page.
You will be asked to complete the presenting author’s contact details, abstract title, proposed type of presentation (oral or poster), the theme, author(s), affiliation details and brief biographical details of the presenting author. If submitting more than one abstract, each abstract should be submitted under the name of the presenting author.
After certifying that all authors have agreed to the submission of the abstract/s, you will then continue to the Upload Abstract page. Please ensure that your abstract is finalised and has been prepared in accordance with the abstract preparation requirements. Before uploading your abstract you will be given an Access Key. Your Access Key will allow you to edit details of the presenting author or reload an amended abstract. This facility will not be available after the abstract submission closing date.
Abstracts should be no more than 250 words.
PRESENTATION TYPES
Four types of presentation are planned for the Conference:
- Keynote/Invited speaker Presentation (40 minutes + 10 minutes for questions)
- Oral Presentation (15 minutes plus 5 minutes for questions)
- Workshops (you will be able to register for these at the time of registering for the conference however they will be arranged independently of the conference and are likely to be offsite from the conference venue). Details will be made available when they come to hand.
- Poster Presentation
Oral Presentation
These are formal presentations of original research. A research paper consists of a 15-minute presentation plus 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Where possible, presentations with a similar theme will be grouped together. Questions and discussion will take place for all presenters at the same time within the allocated concurrent session.
Poster Presentations
Posters will be permanently on display during the Conference. Authors will be requested to stand by their poster at allocated times. Posters can present research in progress, case studies, divisional projects or topics. Poster guidelines will be distributed after acceptance of your abstract including presentation size.
Authors should state a preference for their presentation type and address the abstract to one of the conference streams. However, in balancing the program the Committee may require authors to present their work in an alternate format.
Student awards: Allen Kerr Prize (see APPS website for details)
SELECTION CRITERIA (All Presentations)
Abstracts will be assessed against the following criteria:
- Clarity of Purpose/Aims
- Originality and Interest
- Scientific Merit
- Originality/Significance of Findings/Issues discussed

If your abstract includes a table or graph you will need to submit your abstract via email. Abstracts submitted via email should be in Word format and saved as the authors surname and first name and as a dot doc file (ie. Mawson, Robert.doc)
Please contact Conference Logistics if you are unable to lodge your abstract via the website or if you have any queries.
